How To Install Underdrive Pulleys
1996 to 2004 Ford Mustang (4.6L)

Warning: don’t buy or install underdrive pulleys on your car until you watch this video! We show you which quality brands to go with and why low quality pulleys can cause problems with your Mustang (or any car for that matter).
Highlights
In our very first episode I showed you how to read a check engine code. Well this episode addresses the reason for that annoying service engine soon light.
I share my experience with this problem so that if you decide to install pulleys (which are a great and simple mod) you know which type to choose. In the case of the Mustang I'd recommend Steeda. Generally, do not use any brand that employs the piggy-back style crankshaft pulley!
What You'll Need
Underdrive Pulleys: If you are installing underdrive pulleys on a 1996 – Present Mustang go with Steeda's kits. You can get Mustang underdrive pulleys at AmericanMuscle. They have free shipping and more often than not the best price.
Breaker Bar: It's good to have a longer breaker bar to remove the belt. It also comes in handy when breaking the crankshaft bolt loose and again when you go to tighten the crankshaft bolt the additional 90 degrees.
Torque Wrench: You will need a torque wrench when seating the crankshaft pulley prior to the final additional 90 degree turn.
Socket Set: A standard socket set should have the sizes you need for the water pump pulley. I recommend a longer socket (18mm) for the Mustang's crankshaft pulley.
Harmonic Balancer (Pulley) Puller: In my case the harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley assembly) was so wobbly that it had actually worked itself loose. I didn't need to use a puller to remove the crankshaft pulley assembly but I'd recommend renting one from a place like AutoZone just in case. The kits come with instructions and it will make the job much easier. In most cases you can return the rental tool and get your full deposit back.
High Temperature RTV Silicone Sealant: Do not skip this step unless you want to leak oil wherever you go!
Ramps or Jack and Jack Stands: In this video I drove the car onto ramps as demonstrated in the change oil episode. If you want to use jacks and jack stands check out that episode.
Chalk: This comes in handy when you are trying to measure how far you're turning the bolt.
Impact wrench or Trip to the Local Shop or Parts Store: You will need an impact wrench to remove and install the alternator pulley. If you don't have an impact wrench just take the alternator to the local parts store or your mechanic. Removing the alternator is a piece of cake on the Mustang (like most V8s) but I will release a video on how to do it in the near future.
Applications
This video applies to late model Mustangs. The directions are pretty similar for all Mustangs built since 1996 (the year Ford started putting the 4.6L engine in the Mustang). Exceptions include the Mach 1 Mustang which keeps the stock alternator pulley.
Notes and Warnings
If you have a 2001 Mustang GT you will need to determine which water pump pulley you have before ordering. Click HERE to see an explanation from Steeda.
