Fellow Mustang Owner,

Are you getting the most out of your Mustang?

Has time and mileage REDUCED your horsepower?

If you are serious about taking care of your Mustang (...or prepping your Mustang for performance parts), then you need your car to be running at 100% of its potential. That all starts with a solid tune up.

Doing a tune up on your Mustang will bring back lost horsepower

I warn you, because...

...I see the same problem over and over. Mustang owners spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on performance parts while forgetting the #1 rule:

Before you MODIFY you need to MAINTAIN

Adding aftermarket parts to a car with old spark plugs and a dirty fuel filter just doesn't make any sense. Add those same parts to a tuned up car and now you are getting your money's worth!

If you understand the importance of maintaining your Mustang and are willing to follow just a few easy techniques and tuning secrets, then you and your car will benefit tremendously from this site.

You are probably on this page because...

Yes
You want to learn how to take care of your Mustang but have no idea where to start.
You have been intimidated by working on or tuning cars in the past
You have a general understanding of wrenching but you want to know the tricks of the trade when it comes to Mustang tune ups and maintenance.
You have a repair manual but feel like you could learn better by watching step-by-step in a video.
You don't want to pay someone $300 dollars or more for a tune up and you know you could do the work yourself with a little guidance.
You feel like your Mustang could be faster and you want to take the first step to better performance.

If any of these sound like you, then I encourage you to read every single word on this page to make sure you have the knowledge and skills to keep your Mustang running its strongest!

Let's get started!

What exactly is a tune up and why is it so important?

A 'tune up' is a short way of saying, "replace and check anything that is related to feeding the engine." And in case you weren't sure, you need to feed your engine three things: air, fuel and spark.

In other words, a tune up consists of inspecting or replacing the air filter, fuel filter, ignition system parts (like spark plugs and wires) and inspecting engine fluid levels.

That's it!

But if any one of those filters is clogged or a part is worn out, then expect the whole system to fail:

One spark plug misfiring makes your car slower than a moped.

Too much dirt in the fuel filter starves your engine and can leave you stranded.

And adding go-fast parts can not help an out-of-tune car. To see the full benefit of exhaust systems, intakes or other bolt-ons you need a solid foundation: a car that is tuned up and running smoothly.

NOTICE: If you have more than 30,000 miles on your car you are probably overdue for a tune up and missing out on some hidden horsepower! So what are your options?

There are FOUR primary ways to tune up your Mustang

1.) Hire a mechanic to do the work

WARNING: This will cost you at least $300 for a complete tune up. In many cases it will cost more and the mechanic may only change spark plugs and skip the rest.

Nothing against mechanics. If you can afford it, have a reputable mechanic and are not interested in saying you "did the work yourself" this is one way to go.

2.) You can figure it out on your own by "trial and error"

This option is usually the most expensive--both in time and money. Most people who try to figure it out from random sites or Google searches miss key steps or do it the hard way. In the worst case, they actually damage their vehicle, or quit and end up towing it to a mechanic.

Many people have taken this route not because they preferred to but because they did not have access to the kind of information on this page.

3.) You can shadow experienced enthusiasts or mechanics

If you are fortunate enough to have that "gearhead uncle" or friends that are familiar with Mustangs you will naturally pick up a thing or two from them.

Unfortunately this is not the case for most Mustang enthusiasts.

And even if you are lucky to have such friends, not everyone is a good teacher and you may walk away with quite a few gaps in your understanding of the tune up process.

4.) You can use self-help material to learn at your own pace.

The last (and my favorite way) to learn is to use self-help resources like the ones featured on this site to learn at your own pace.

A self-paced course is great because you don't have to worry about missing steps--everything is laid out clearly. If you want to slow things down a bit or skip ahead to a certain section you can do that too!

You save money by doing the work yourself and you know it is done right. Let's face it: no one is going to put as much care into your Mustang as you will.
